Car Audio 4X6, 5X7, and 6X8 Speakers
As mentioned before, oval speakers are not the best sounding speakers. That is particularly true when trying to play the upper midrange. Oval speakers such as the 4X6 used by GM and the 5X7 or 6X8 used by Ford Motor Company tend to distort or blur the upper midrange due to their cone shape. That is nothing new but rather something we have known for decades. Despite that, both Ford and GM committed to employing oval speakers in many if not all of their vehicles for many years. Because the coil is a cylindrical piston, it tends to pull more on the short side of the cone than on the long side. This causes the cone to flex and generate sonic artifacts that are pretty noticeable. However, using an adapter plate for around drivers means giving up quite a bit of cone areas and low-end extension. This is no big deal if your car stereo system has a subwoofer. If you don’t consider spending a little extra on a better set of Car Audio 4X6, 5X7, or 6X8 Speakers, maybe even stepping it up to a set of components. This is truly the best performance you are going to get from an oval Car Audio Speaker like 4X6, 5X7, and 6X8.
