Resolution:

While HD 1080P resolution is quite suitable, some dash cams offer the higher 1440p or even 4K resolutions. Other equal importance features are a wide-angle lens, wide aperture for capturing,  image stabilization, a fast, steady frame rate for smooth sharp video, and night vision.

Front, Rear, and in Cabinet Recording:

Most dashcams can record video in front of the vehicle and the back of the car. The better ones can record audio as well as cabinet action. Determining what dashboard cam to buy has a lot to do with your vehicle and your needs. At Thunder Electronics, we strongly encourage front and rear simultaneous recording at a bare minimum. Still, if you drive a box truck or tow a large trailer, that may not be practical, which is why there are so many different dash cams on the market. Another popular application or type of dash cam is the one popular with share drive drivers. That type of dash cam records what’s going on in front of the vehicle and in the cab.

WIFI Access & Cloud Backup

We have seen many new dashcam manufacturers add Wi-Fi access and cloud access or backup of your videos to the cloud. We can see how this can be an attractive feature but not something we recommend. On more than one occasion, we have seen this feature become a potential invasion of privacy. Sure, it is cool to have the ability to upload footage to social media. Understand that this is particularly risky with any device which has Wi-Fi. Unless you are very familiar with Wi-Fi configuration, we strongly suggest just getting the largest, best-quality SD card your dashcam can take.
